The decision, following a proposal by Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) Governor Giorgos Pitsilis, was announced on Wednesday.
The mandatory sticker, to be placed on the rear right door window, informs passengers in both Greek and English that drivers must issue a receipt at the end of the ride and accept card payments. It also clarifies that customers are not required to pay in cash or before receiving a legal receipt.
AADE will distribute the stickers to the Panhellenic Taxi Federation, which will then supply them to its members. Taxis must display the sticker within three weeks of receiving it. Non-compliance will result in a €1,000 fine. A complaint hotline is expected to be established soon.
Greek Economy and Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis emphasised the importance of this measure, noting that it will also extend to other sectors. "We are starting with sectors that concern the majority of citizens, and taxis are vital to our tourism industry," he said.
Omiros Tsapalos, the ministry’s press representative, highlighted that many taxi drivers currently fail to inform passengers about the availability of credit card payments, often citing issues with POS machines. “Citizens demand good service and the right to an alternative payment method. We must protect our tourism industry and the rights of citizens,” he stated, clarifying that his remarks were aimed at those deliberately misleading customers.
