The blaze has consumed approximately 1,500 hectares of forest and vegetation, and on Wednesday morning, it came within a dangerous four kilometres of the Greek village of Achladohori. Authorities issued a 112 alert to residents, urging them to remain vigilant.
Over 60 firefighters, supported by aerial units, are battling the flames, but their efforts have been hampered by a minefield in the area. The fire has also spread to the Bulgarian side, prompting Sofia to activate the EU's civil protection mechanism.
Both Greece and Bulgaria are working together to contain the blaze, which has been made more challenging by the presence of unexploded World War II mines.
