Three boats sank in Zea Marina after a fire broke out last night in one of them and quickly spread to the other two. One more boat sustained extensive damage.
The area in the port has been cordoned off. The Coast Guard has placed a floating barrier to prevent sea pollution.
The fire initially started on a tourist boat. So far, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
The smoke was so intense that ten people who were walking on the pier were trapped and called for help. A Coast Guard vessel picked them up and transported them to a safe spot in the Marina. Nine fire department vehicles and a fireboat participated in the firefighting effort.
