Greece Reopens National Council Against Racism and Intolerance

Deputy Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Katerina Papakosta-Palioura, announced the official reopening of the National Council Against Racism and Intolerance during a meeting with Maria Clara Martin, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' representative in Greece, on Friday.

This move follows a complaint by the High Commission emphasising the Council's crucial role in combating racism at all levels. "We will ensure the smooth functioning of this critical, collective, and consultative-advisory body dedicated to monitoring and addressing issues of discrimination and intolerance, as well as planning anti-racism policies," stated Papakosta. She reaffirmed Greece's commitment to fighting racism and promoting equality.

Maria Clara Martin highlighted the importance of collaboration in tackling racism and intolerance in Greece. "We look forward to continuing our work with the Greek government to create a more inclusive society," Martin said.

The meeting also reviewed the status of their recently expired memorandum of cooperation. Both parties recognised the need for continued collaboration and agreed to update and renew the memorandum to address evolving human rights challenges.
