Kontou and Fitsiou win bronze in rowing, adding another success to the Greek medal haul.
Just 20 minutes after Antonis Papakonstantinou and Petros Gkaidatzis won the bronze medal in the men's lightweight double sculls, it was Zoe Fitsiou and Milena Kontou's turn to claim another medal for Greece.
In their first Olympic Games appearance, they secured Greece's fourth medal in Paris and the sixth Olympic medal in Greek rowing history.
This win also marks the 125th medal for Greece in the modern Olympic Games and the sixth in the history of the country in rowing.
It is noteworthy that the Greek crew was outside of the medal positions for most of the race, but with a tremendous final push, they overtook New Zealand to claim the bronze.
The girls gave their all and finished third with a time of 6:49.28. The British duo, Emily Craig and Imogen Grant, secured gold with a time of 6:47.06. Romania won the silver medal with 6:48.78.
In more detail, although they started well and were ahead in the first 300 meters, the first 500 meters saw them drop to third place with Great Britain and Romania taking the lead, having dictated the pace of the race.
At that point, New Zealand entered the equation, overtaking the Greek pair around the 700-meter mark, and it appeared that the gap was widening.
However, Milena and Zoe quickly began to pick up the pace and from the 1300-meter mark onwards, a great comeback began. Entering the final 500 meters, they caught the New Zealand crew and with their impressive rhythm, not only did they overtake them, but they even came close to challenging the Romanians for the silver medal.
