The city of Heraklion and the famous Knossos, Phaistos, Gortyn, Matala, Hersonissos and the wildly fun Malia are not the only reasons to travel to the prefecture.
Head towards the centre and the south, with great attractions like the colourful Archanes and unique secrets, such as Asterousia with Kapetaniana, Kofinas, Lake Zaros, and Agiofarango.
And still, there are historic monasteries, small but important museums, and traditional cafes. There, even the bread with olives, tomato, and coarse salt competes in taste with the gourmet dishes.
In addition to being the administrative capital of Crete, Heraklion also has the largest port and airport on Greece's largest island.
