Greece Vows Thorough Investigations and Justice for Arsonists

Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced on Tuesday that authorities will continue detailed investigations into all fires and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

A 66-year-old man appeared before a prosecutor after being arrested for intentional arson in the southern suburb of Vari on June 8 and 9. Additionally, a 33-year-old man was detained following his arrest for deliberately setting three fires in Magoula, Elefsina, on July 31 and August 1.

The arrests were made by the Fire Department's arson investigation unit. Kikilias also reported the arrest of three individuals involved in a fire in Koromilia near Domokos, central Greece. The fire, which threatened nearby homes, was fought with the help of seven aircraft and a helicopter.

Kikilias emphasised that the government will rigorously investigate all fire-related incidents to ensure that perpetrators face justice. He highlighted changes in the Criminal Code, noting that arson by negligence now carries up to 10 years in prison, while intentional arson can result in up to 20 years of incarceration.
