August has solidified its position as the peak month for Greece’s tourism industry, with a surge in visitors to a range of popular destinations across the country.

Tourists, both international and domestic, have been flocking to locales including Messinia in the Peloponnese, the island of Kythnos in the Cyclades, and Ierapetra on Crete’s southeastern coast.

Dimitris Karalis, President of the Messinia Hoteliers Association, shared with Mega Channel that the region is experiencing exceptional demand. “We are at full capacity; with more rooms, we could accommodate even more guests,” Karalis said. He projected that this high level of interest would persist until around August 20th to 22nd. Although the tourism season started off slower than expected in May, recent improvements have bolstered bookings, with current prices for accommodations starting at 70 euros per night.

In Kythnos, Dimitris Garderakis, a local hotelier, reported that while July saw fluctuating demand, August has been promising. “Even though the island has a significant number of accommodations, we are fully booked for now, with availability only if cancellations occur. Room rates are between 70 and 80 euros per night,” Garderakis noted.

Crete, one of Greece‘s most sought-after destinations, is also seeing robust tourist activity. Manolis Mihelarakis, President of the association representing food and beverage establishments in Ierapetra, stated that both hotels and short-term rentals are at full occupancy. “We strive to keep prices reasonable as many of our restaurants are open throughout the year to provide visitors with a taste of our local cuisine,” Mihelarakis said.
