Greece faces extreme fire danger in several regions, including Attica and parts of Central Greece and the Peloponnese, due to strong winds and dry conditions. The government has issued a Class Five fire warning, urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid activities that could spark fires, as authorities prepare for a challenging week ahead.
The areas at highest risk include Attica, Viotia, and Evia in the Central Greece Region, as well as Argolida, Corinth, and Lakonia in the Peloponnese Region.
In addition to these areas, a very high (Class Four) fire danger is also forecast for Evros in Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, the Sporades islands in Thessaly, parts of Central Greece including Fokida, Fthiotida, and Skyros, as well as Achaia and Ilia in the Peloponnese, the Western Greece Region, the Cyclades islands, and Crete.
In response to these warnings, all relevant state services, regional, and municipal authorities have been placed on high alert. Citizens are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution, avoiding any activities that could spark fires, such as burning vegetation, using machinery that could create sparks, lighting fires, or smoking out bees.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection held a meeting of the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee to evaluate the upcoming week's weather conditions. This was followed by a coordination meeting with all relevant agencies.
Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias warned that from Sunday until August 15th, Greece will experience dangerous weather conditions that could lead to forest fires. “We are expecting a combination of very strong winds ranging from 6 to 7 Beaufort, with gusts reaching up to 8 Beaufort, along with drought and dryness. Consequently, half of Greece will be in the ‘red zone’,” Kikilias stated.
He announced the implementation of emergency measures involving the Army, Police, volunteers, Fire Service, and Local Authorities. Kikilias also urged all citizens to remain vigilant and exercise the utmost responsibility during this critical period.
