Palace of Legendary King Minos Draws Throngs of Visitors

Knossos

As of early August, the Palace of Knossos, once the residence of the fabled King Minos on the southern island of Crete, has seen a remarkable influx of over 5,000 visitors daily.

The area's foot traffic has reached a peak, with chief warden Nikos Papadakis reporting to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that visitor numbers during August can surpass 200,000. He also indicated that 2024 may witness total attendance exceed 1 million if the current trends continue.

Knossos served as the heart of the Bronze Age Minoan Civilization, functioning not only as the home of the royal family but also as the administrative and religious hub of the region.

This ancient site is steeped in Greek mythology, famously linked to tales such as the Minotaur, the Labyrinth, and the legendary exploits of Daedalus and Icarus.
