A 44-year-old Serbian man who died suddenly while on holiday in South Corfu had ingested packets of drugs that caused a fatal intestinal obstruction, according to a coroner’s report released on Sunday. The man was found dead on August 7 in the residence where he had been staying.
Coroner Ioannis Aivatidis, speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, revealed that the deceased had five plastic packets containing a white powder, likely cocaine, in his stomach. The combined weight of the packets was 83 grams. Further examination suggested that additional drugs had already passed through his digestive system.
Aivatidis explained that the plastic packets were not fully sealed, causing them to expand inside the man’s stomach, which led to an intestinal blockage and the inhalation of gastric juices into his lungs.
These findings contradict the initial belief that the man had died from natural causes. Following the coroner’s report, the police were notified, and the drugs squad has taken over the investigation. The five packets of drugs were confiscated as evidence.
