Antisamos Beach: Ionian Sea waters with 3 stunning colours

Despite being made famous in the 2000s by the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Antisamos remains an easily accessible beach.

The 2000s changed the fortunes of Antisamos Beach, as the scenes filmed there for "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" made it very famous after the film's international success.

Nevertheless, although it is on various lists of the best beaches of Kefalonia, Antisamos remains a relatively quiet summer destination that does not easily get crowded if we exclude the busiest days of July and August when most visitors arrive, mostly foreigners.

Located in the mouth of a picturesque bay on the island's eastern side (opposite Ithaca), between two tree-lined promontories, Antisamos is a verdant beach with coarse, white pebbles, almost like an extension of its surrounding pine forests.

Access here is easy by road and sea, which is why you'll see quite a few luxury yachts approaching, especially during the height of the Greek summer.

Excellent water with three different colours

As already said, Antisamos's location is extremely charming. This is largely due to Mount Avgo, whose pine forest covers the foothills and almost spreads to the beach, giving it an intensely green character.

Its great asset, however, is its beautiful waters, which are awarded a blue flag every year. When calm (and it usually is), Antisamos Beach looks like a mountain lake, and its surrounding landscape is mirrored.

Its calm, deep, crystal-clear waters exemplify the Ionian Sea's virtues.

In fact, what characterises them and makes a special impression on visitors (especially those who come for the first time) are their three different colours: in the shallows, that is, an intense emerald prevails, which turns blue again as you head inward, to then turn dark blue.

Antisamos is an organised beach, meaning you will find parking, sunbeds, and umbrellas, which the beach bars set up on the shore.

How to get to Antisamos

Antisamos is 22 kilometres from Argostoli—the capital of Kefalonia—and only 4 kilometres from Sami, which is also its nearest town. Access to the beach is very easy, as it has a good paved road.

Of course, access by sea (again from Sami) is equally comfortable. Especially in the summer, many luxury boats come to the picturesque bay.

The road from Sami to the beach is enjoyable for nature lovers as you will cross the pine forest. In fact, you will see many people stopping at a specially designed platform to take commemorative photos.

If you are now interested in a little hiking, beyond swimming in the sea, near the beach, you will find the monastery of Panagia in Agrilia. From there, you can enjoy the impressive view towards the strait that separates Kefalonia from Ithaca.

Also, ask how to get to the (now ruined) Monastery of Agioi Fanentes, which is nearby and offers another beautiful nature trail.

Finally, if you don't have your own vehicle, you can easily get to Antisamos with KTEL (bus). Look for the relevant itineraries (which also take care of your return) and will drop you right next to the beach.
