Almost every neighbourhood has its own perfect spot where locals enjoy the sunset - during the winter and summer. The most privileged are those who live in the west, mainly on the slopes of the western suburbs, but also those who live near the sea
Below are just a few of these places to enjoy the landscape turn orange.
Areopagus Hill
One of the most beautiful spots in the city to see the sunset is Areopagus Hill, opposite the entrance to the Acropolis. Climb the metal steps and carefully walk on the slippery stones, choosing your own rock.
The truth is, you won't be alone, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Young couples, tourists, and groups of students sit on the rocks and watch the orange light bathe the Acropolis and the western suburbs opposite. Below, the Ancient Agora, where the Athens Republic was born, with the beautiful temple of Hephaestus, can be seen.
Strefi Hill
From Strefi Hill, you can enjoy an incredible sunset with a view that extends to the sea. There are much fewer people compared to Areopagus HIll. Go up the hill paths between pines and cypresses to reach the top. The further west you sit, the better the view will be.
From there, you can see the Acropolis in the background, the sea, and the western suburbs, with Mount Egaleo painted in the colours of the sunset. After your walk, Exarchia offers excellent dining options, thus combining two pleasures in one.
Anavissos Beach
Want to watch the sun sink into the sea while relaxing on a sun lounger with a cold beer in hand? Then, choose the western beaches of the prefecture of Attica as your destination.
One of the best options with beach bars is the long sandy beach of Anavissos.
As soon as the sun disappears into the sea, you can head to the square of Palaia Fokaia and continue your evening in the nearby tavernas.
Thimari Beach
A favourite spot is Thimari Beach, just a few kilometres from Anavissos, in the direction of Sounio. With a greater opening towards the sea, you will enjoy the horizon painted in orange and purple even better.
You will find beach bars but also free spots where you can set up your equipment. In addition, you can get everything you need from the shops on the beach. For example, a cool cocktail while enjoying the sun and the sea is an ideal choice.
Sounio
Cape Souni, the most famous spot in Attica outside of Athens to admire the sunset, must be on the list. Whether you are on a rock high up, in a cafe, or inside the archaeological site of the temple of Poseidon, you will enjoy an amazing view as the sun slowly dips into the sea.
If you choose to be inside the archaeological site, you will also have a 360° panoramic view, watching the sunset colour the land and the sea.
Penteli
If you like to add a degree of difficulty and are looking for a challenge to make the experience even more interesting, then you can climb the Mount Penteli.
Whether you start a hike from the square of Agia Triada or drive up to the cave of Davelis and continue with a short climb to the chapel of Agios Ioannis Latomou, you will enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in Athens.
There are also some benches in front of the chapel, where you can sit, rest, and admire the dusk enveloping the city.
