Nick Kyrgios returned to the tennis court after a long injury layoff, teaming up with Naomi Osaka for a mixed doubles exhibition at the US Open. His return came amidst controversy surrounding his scathing criticism of Jannik Sinner, who recently escaped a ban despite failing two drug tests.
New York, August 21, 2024: Nick Kyrgios made his long-awaited return to the tennis court today, teaming up with Naomi Osaka in a mixed doubles exhibition match at the US Open. The duo donned K
Kobe Bryant jerseys in a heartfelt tribute to the late NBA legend.
Kyrgios, sidelined since January 2023 due to knee and wrist injuries, showed glimpses of his trademark flair but ultimately fell short against Taylor Fritz and Amanda Anisimova. Nevertheless, his return marks a significant step in his recovery.
The exhibition match came just hours after Kyrgios launched a scathing attack on Jannik Sinner, who recently escaped a ban despite failing two drug tests. Sinner tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol in March but avoided suspension after claiming the substance entered his system through a contaminated medical spray.
Kyrgios was unconvinced by Sinner's explanation, taking to social media to demand a two-year ban for the Italian. "You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years," Kyrgios wrote. "Your performance was enhanced."
While the International Tennis Integrity unit ultimately cleared Sinner of "fault or negligence," the rising star was stripped of his Indian Wells ranking points and prize money.
Kyrgios's return to court and his outspoken criticism of Sinner are sure to dominate headlines as the US Open gets underway.
