Maria Branyas Morera, believed to be the world’s oldest person, has passed away at the age of 117. The American-born Spaniard died peacefully in her sleep, her family announced Tuesday.
“Maria Branyas has left us,” her family wrote on social media. “She has gone the way she wanted: in her sleep, at peace, and without pain.”
In the days leading up to her death, Ms. Morera told her family, “I don’t know when, but very soon this long journey will come to an end. Death will find me worn down from having lived so much, but I want to meet it with a smile, feeling free and satisfied.”
The Gerontology Research Group, which verifies supercentenarian claims, listed Ms. Morera as the oldest living person following the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year. Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, at 116, is now considered the world’s oldest.
Born in San Francisco, California, in 1907, Ms. Morera returned to Spain with her family as a child.
