Two Italian nationals were arrested on Thursday for lighting a fire on Pigi Beach, located near a forested area on the Antipaxi islands in western Greece.

The men, aged 50 and 53, were skippers of yachts and were fined €2,250 each by the Fire Department before being brought before a prosecutor.

Although the men had extinguished the fire themselves, they were initially charged for violating Greece’s strict fire ban, which is in effect from May 1 to October 31 each year due to the high risk of wildfires. The prosecutor later acquitted them, acknowledging their efforts to put out the fire.
