Greek Rowing Teams Dominate World Championships having achieved extraordinary success at the World Rowing Championships in Saint-Catharines, Canada.
Out of the five Greek crews that competed in the finals today in the junior and under-23 categories, Greece clinched three gold medals, one silver, and one fifth place.
Panagiotis Makrygiannis secured the gold medal in the junior single sculls after a thrilling race. Nikos Cholopoulos and Konstantinos Yannoulis claimed the gold in the junior double sculls, while Gavriela Lioliou and Valia Lykomitrou became world champions in the under-23 women's double sculls. Notably, both double sculls crews had previously won gold at the European Championships in their respective age categories and events, setting the stage for their world championship victories.
Nefeli Dara and Dimitra Papaioannou won the silver medal in the under-23 women's pair.
A breakdown of the races:
- Nikos Cholopoulos and Konstantinos Yannoulis crossed the finish line first in the final of the junior double sculls with a time of 6:50.18.
- Gavriela Lioliou and Valia Lykomitrou gave their all in the final sprint to overtake the British boat and secure the gold medal in the under-23 women's double sculls.
- Panagiotis Makrygiannis delivered a remarkable performance in the junior single sculls, overtaking the German rower in the final meters to claim the gold.
- Nefeli Dara and Dimitra Papaioannou won the silver medal in the under-23 women's pair, improving on their fourth-place finish at the European Championships.
Demosthenes Koutsoyiannis and Andreas Bourkas finished fifth in the junior men's pair in their first World Championship appearance together.
