In a remarkable medical breakthrough, Amanda Smith, a 35-year-old nurse from London, may have found a cure for her Type 1 diabetes through an innovative stem cell therapy.
Doctors successfully transplanted lab-grown islet cells into Smith's liver earlier this year, and by August, she no longer required insulin injections. This breakthrough is part of a clinical trial conducted by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, involving 12 participants who received similar treatments.
Among the participants, 11 experienced a significant reduction in their insulin dependency, with some no longer needing any insulin. Despite these promising results, the therapy remains in its early stages, and long-term efficacy and safety are still under evaluation.
Medical experts continue to express concerns over the potential risks associated with the immune-suppressing medications required to prevent cell rejection.
