Athens Municipality Unveils Anti-Graffiti Service and New App to Boost City Cleanliness

In a bid to enhance Athens’ urban landscape, the Athens Municipality has introduced a range of initiatives designed to improve cleanliness and curb graffiti. This effort includes the launch of a revamped anti-graffiti service and a new smartphone app aimed at promoting cleanliness among residents.

A recent city council meeting highlighted the importance of focusing on three main areas: regulatory enforcement, the development of new infrastructure, and educating and motivating residents to participate.

The municipality plans to upgrade graffiti removal services across streets, parks, squares, and public buildings to swiftly address and remove offensive graffiti.

In addition, a new app will soon be available to help citizens track waste collection schedules in their areas, while QR codes placed on bins will offer guidance on correct waste disposal practices.

“We are creating a comprehensive strategy that involves rigorous controls, improved infrastructure, and active citizen engagement,” stated Mayor Haris Doukas.

Expanded Initiatives in the Municipal Plan

Detailing the municipal strategy further, Mayor Doukas highlighted nine additional actions geared towards achieving a cleaner Athens. These efforts aim to improve quality of life and enhance the city’s appearance.

Key components of the municipality’s action plan include:

– Formation of a cleanliness oversight team featuring municipal police and cleaning supervisors, starting September 9 in the city center and rolling out to all municipal communities. This team will monitor compliance and enforce fines as necessary.

– The Waste Transfer Station (SMA) will become fully operational on October 1, promoting efficient and eco-friendly waste management.

– More bins will be installed in high-traffic areas prone to overflow, accompanied by surveillance and additional collection routes to manage excess waste.

– Strategic placement of 62 submersible bin systems throughout the city to improve aesthetics, reduce odors, and optimize waste management.

– Six days a week, cleaning activities will take place across all neighborhoods, with intensified efforts planned for Sundays.

– Expansion of the household bio-waste collection program from the 5th to the 3rd and 7th arrondissements. Information campaigns and distribution of household bins are set for September to encourage waste sorting and recycling at the source.

– Regular collection of abandoned vehicles, with new vehicles identified and older ones removed on a weekly basis per apartment.

– Collaboration with institutional bodies to coordinate waste deposit schedules, bio-waste collection, and related processes.

– Establishment of a volunteer network focused on organizing citywide cleaning activities.
