The Athens Police Directorate has announced the prohibition of two planned rallies scheduled for Sunday morning at Syntagma Square.

The ban, which was made public on Friday, applies to gatherings organised by the “Constitutional National Assembly/Direct Democracy” movement at 12:00 PM and a pre-rally by the “Community of Special Forces Reserves” at 10:30 AM.

According to the police, the ban will be in effect from 6:00 AM on Sunday until 6:00 AM on Monday, covering several key areas around Syntagma Square, including Alexandras and Messoghion Avenues, Michalakopoulou and Ilia Iliou Streets, Syngrou, Pireos, and Plateia Karaiskaki.

The police cited two primary reasons for the prohibition: the organisers’ failure to inform authorities about their plans to invite the public, and concerns over significant threats to public safety. They also noted potential disruptions to social and economic activities in the area, including traffic flow, pedestrian movement, and the operation of essential services and infrastructure.

The decision to ban the rallies underscores the authorities’ heightened vigilance in maintaining public order and safety in central Athens.
