The ruling New Democracy party, along with the main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance and PASOK-Movement for Change, voted in favor, while the Communist Party (KKE), "Niki," and "Spartiates" opposed it. Elliniki Lysi, New Left, and Plefsi Eleftherias chose to abstain.
Greek Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, emphasised the significance of the agreement, highlighting its role in creating a shared digital landscape between the two countries. He noted that this collaboration is crucial for establishing common procedures, perspectives, and solutions to the challenges of the digital age.
The memorandum aims to facilitate the mutual recognition of digital documents between Greece and Cyprus, simplifying transactions and identification processes for citizens of both countries. The partnership will begin with the development of the Gov.cy Digital Citizen platform for Cypriot citizens, modeled after Greece’s Gov.gr Wallet. Cyprus's experience with electronic identity, particularly the CY-eID system developed under EU Regulation 2024/1183, will be instrumental in supporting Greece's digital initiatives.
This cooperation marks a significant step towards a unified digital infrastructure, benefiting citizens and businesses in both Greece and Cyprus.
