A Scoot flight from Melbourne to Singapore was diverted to Jakarta early on September 4 as a precautionary measure after experiencing issues with one of its Boeing 787's engines. Flight TR25 departed Melbourne Airport around 10 PM local time on September 3, with an expected arrival at Changi Airport in Singapore at 3:25 AM on September 4.
However, the flight altered its course over the Java Sea at approximately 1:55 AM Singapore time, heading southwest and landing in Jakarta about 40 minutes later. A passenger on the flight reported on Facebook that the plane had to land using only its left engine due to an oil leak in the right engine, which was shut down according to standard safety protocols.
Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, confirmed that a "low oil pressure indication" was detected in the right engine, prompting the diversion. The aircraft, an eight-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, landed safely but could not be repaired immediately as spare parts needed to be flown in.
In response, Scoot provided accommodation and transportation for passengers stranded in Jakarta. A relief flight, TR5587, was dispatched to Jakarta on September 4, departing for Singapore around 4 PM local time. Scoot apologized for the disruption and inconvenience caused to passengers.
This incident comes amid ongoing challenges in the aviation industry related to aircraft engines. Cathay Pacific recently canceled 45 round-trip flights due to engine issues on its A350-1000 planes, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, with repairs underway. Additionally, manufacturing defects in Pratt & Whitney's PW1100G engines have led to the grounding of hundreds of Airbus A320neo jets, including three from Scoot's fleet, with further disruptions expected through 2026.
