A standoff with a man threatening to commit suicide by detonating a gas cylinder in an apartment building on Acharnon Street in central Athens ended after approximately five hours of negotiations on Tuesday.
Acharnon, Greece - A tense standoff in the Acharnon district of Athens ended peacefully today after EKAM special forces stormed an apartment building and apprehended a 28-year-old Palestinian man who had threatened to detonate a gas canister.
The incident began earlier in the morning when police and fire services were alerted to a man, initially claiming to be Syrian, experiencing a mental health crisis. He had taken to the balcony of an apartment building adjacent to the Ministry of Rural Development, brandishing knives and a gas canister.
According to reports, the man threatened to blow up the entire block, claiming his family had been killed in a bombing. He had also reportedly threatened suicide the previous week, on September 3rd, and was subsequently hospitalized in a psychiatric facility.
The man, allegedly struggling with drug addiction, initially threatened to jump from the building.
"Due to the situation, we were told to evacuate the Ministry of Rural Development building," stated the president of the Ministry's employees union, adding that the building where the man was located had also been evacuated.
As a precaution, traffic police closed Acharnon Street between Marnis and Stournari Streets while the operation was underway.
The situation was successfully resolved when members of the EKAM special forces unit entered the apartment, subdued the man, and took him into custody. He is expected to undergo a mental health evaluation.
