In a notable first official meeting, Bill Papastergiadis OAM, President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan engaged in a constructive discussion, highlighting their shared commitment to the Greek community in Victoria. Government MPs Nick Staikos, Kat Theophanous, and Lee Tarlamis attended the meeting, which was marked by its warm and amicable atmosphere.

Reflecting on her Bendigo upbringing, Premier Allan acknowledged that personal connections, including a Greek friend and neighbour, enriched her understanding of Greek heritage. The conversation primarily focused on the significant contributions of Greek Australians across various sectors, such as arts, education, commerce, and sports.

“Greek culture is a cornerstone of Melbourne and Victoria’s identity,” Premier Allan stated. “It was a pleasure to meet Bill Papastergiadis and discuss how we can continue celebrating Greek culture through events, festivals, and educational programs. Our relationship with the Greek community is more than a partnership; it’s a genuine friendship. We have achieved much together and look forward to further collaboration.”

The discussion also touched on the Premier’s recent announcement at the VMC Gala Dinner about naming over 6,000 roads, parks, and public spaces to honour individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Papastergiadis appreciated this initiative, emphasizing its role in recognizing Victoria’s rich diversity. “This announcement is a tangible acknowledgement of our multifaceted identity and will preserve our place in history for future generations,” he noted.

Papastergiadis presented a detailed overview of the GCM’s education program, stressing the importance of preserving the Greek language. He also highlighted upcoming infrastructure projects for Alphington Grammar and the two other Greek grammar schools—St. John’s and Oakleigh Grammar.

Premier Allan expressed her commitment to attending the Antipodes Festival in 2025, describing it as a significant highlight of Melbourne’s cultural calendar.

In closing, Papastergiadis remarked, “The Greek Community of Melbourne has a supportive ally in the Premier. With the dedicated efforts of Steve Dimopoulos, Nick Staikos, Kat Theophanous, and Lee Tarlamis, we are well-positioned to advance our community's interests and needs.”
