Explore the enchanting world of Mykonos from 1959 to 1979 as captured by renowned photographer Christos Poulidis whose legendary images offer a glimpse into the island's transformation from a serene getaway to a global hotspot.
The current exhibition, "The Spotlights on Mykonos 1959-1979," at the Mykonos Municipal Art Gallery, runs until September 30th, 2024. Curated by Giorgos Poulidis, Christos Poulidis' son, the show features 60 striking photographs of notable figures from Greek and international circles who graced the island during this vibrant period.
One standout image is a 1960 photograph of Princess Soraya of Iran, who, despite her usual reluctance to be photographed, appears alongside a Mykonian pelican. Giorgos Poulidis reflects on his father’s charm and professionalism: “Princess Soraya didn’t like people approaching or photographing her, but my father managed to break the ice.”
The exhibition includes images of various distinguished guests, such as Greek statesman Konstantinos Karamanlis, known for his frequent visits and warm receptions by locals. Melina Mercouri and her husband, Jules Dassin, are also featured, captured enjoying a boat trip. Another compelling photograph shows composer Stavros Xarchakos with journalist Dimitris Liberopoulos during a beachside rehearsal for the musical "Children of the Universe" in 1972. The exhibition also highlights the frequent visits of Aristotle and Alexander Onassis, prominent figures in Mykonos during that era.
Christos Poulidis, whose career began in Athens where he worked for news agencies, made a significant impact by capturing Mykonos in its more unspoiled days. “He predicted the rise of Mykonos as a tourist destination,” says his son, noting that Poulidis opened an office on the island in the late 1950s. This foresight allowed him to document a different Mykonos—simpler and more romantic than the bustling tourist spot it is today.
Christos Poulidis and his brothers continued the family tradition of photojournalism, following in the footsteps of their father, Petros Poulidis, who is considered the first photojournalist in Greece.
This exhibition is part of a broader effort to digitise and preserve Poulidis’ work, now managed by his son. An additional exhibition in Athens is also in the works, promising to further celebrate the legacy of this influential photographer.
