In Athens yesterday, Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain’s Popular Party (PP), commended Greece’s migration policies as “fair, austere, and humanitarian,” drawing a sharp contrast with what he called Spain’s “non-existent” approach.

Meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Feijóo lauded Greece’s long-standing, consistent strategy, which he credited with curbing irregular migration. He criticized the Spanish government, suggesting it lacked a cohesive policy and instead simply sought to “distribute the problem” of irregular migration across Spain’s autonomous communities.

Feijóo emphasized the shared responsibility of Greece and Spain as key entry points to Europe, calling for a unified EU migration policy. He advocated for increased border security, greater European funding, and a stronger role for agencies like Frontex and Europol.

Additionally, he called for new agreements with migrant origin and transit countries to better manage migration flows and combat human trafficking. Feijóo revealed he shared his plan to address “the lack of control of migration” with both Mitsotakis and Greek Migration Minister Nikos Panayotópulos.

Feijóo’s Athens visit marks the start of a European tour to build alliances on pressing EU issues, with migration as a central theme. He stressed the need for a “European alliance against irregular immigration,” framing it as a critical concern for both individual nations and the EU as a whole, requiring a collaborative approach between Spain and Greece.
