Anthony Koutoufides Visits Melbourne Greek Centre, Discusses Mayoral Campaign and Support for Greek Community

Anthony Koutoufides, former AFL star and independent candidate for Melbourne's upcoming mayoral race, visited the Greek Centre in Melbourne, where he was welcomed by the President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), Bill Papastergiadis OAM.

Also in attendance were Jorge Menidis, Director of the Greek Centre, and Antonia Tsamis, Venue and Event Manager.

During his visit, Koutoufides toured the Greek Centre and was briefed on the GCM's cultural and educational activities, which include hosting over 100 events annually to celebrate Greek heritage in Melbourne. Papastergiadis emphasised the GCM's role as a vibrant hub for the Greek diaspora, contributing to the city's multicultural fabric.

Koutoufides, of Greek Cypriot and Italian descent, expressed his admiration for the Centre’s achievements and its impact on the local community. He praised the preservation of Lonsdale Street’s Greek presence and voiced his commitment to supporting cultural initiatives if elected mayor. "I look forward to working with the GCM to help make Melbourne the world’s most liveable city again," Koutoufides said, highlighting the need to reduce red tape and promote community events.

Papastergiadis shared his enthusiasm for Koutoufides’ candidacy, noting his deep ties to Melbourne and the Greek community. "It's great to have someone like Anthony, with his Greek heritage and community spirit, running for Lord Mayor," he said.

As a token of appreciation, Koutoufides was presented with a book detailing the history of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, further strengthening his connection to the community.

Anthony Koutoufides is best known for his celebrated career with the Carlton Football Club, where he was hailed as one of the most athletic players in Australian Rules Football. Beyond sports, he has become a popular television personality, winning Dancing with the Stars in 2006.
