Tzitzikostas, the governor of Central Macedonia, will take on the role of Commissioner for Transport and Tourism, while Kadis will be the Commissioner for Oceans and Fisheries.
The new Commission also includes Spain’s Teresa Ribera as the antitrust commissioner and Estonia’s Kaja Kallas as the lead for foreign policy. Notably, Lithuania’s Andrius Kubilius will be the EU’s first Defence Commissioner, a position created to bolster European military capacity amid rising tensions with Russia.
French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné will manage industrial strategy, and Slovakia’s Maroš Šefčovič will oversee trade policies. Von der Leyen highlighted that the Commission will prioritize prosperity, security, and competitiveness, with a focus on green and digital transitions.
The new Commission, which will start its term by the end of the year, will be subject to hearings by the European Parliament. The appointments come at a crucial time, with potential global shifts, including the US presidential election, on the horizon.
