The Greek government has outlined a comprehensive 10-year purchasing plan, which also includes acquiring up to 40 F-35 fighter jets from the U.S. and three frigates from France. The Switchblade drones, manufactured by AeroVironment Inc., are designed to fly to a target and detonate upon impact. They have recently gained prominence for their use by the Ukrainian military in striking Russian forces.
A Greek official confirmed to Reuters that the Switchblade drones have been selected, though the exact number to be purchased has not been disclosed. The total cost for these drones is estimated at 75.2 million euros. The procurement will include two types of Switchblade drones, with ranges of up to 20 km and 40 km, respectively.
The acquisition of these drones will complement Greece's existing arsenal, including Spike anti-tank missiles purchased from Israel. Additionally, Greece plans to develop its own drone and anti-drone systems to further enhance its defense capabilities.
This move is part of Greece's broader strategy to strengthen its military amid ongoing tensions with Turkey, a fellow NATO member. The procurement must also receive approval from Greece's top decision-making body on foreign affairs and defense, known as KYSEA.
