Michel, a central figure in a large-scale fraud operation targeting Greece‘s National Organisation for Provision of Healthcare Services (EOPYY), has been remanded in custody after authorities deemed him a flight risk.
The criminal ring is accused of defrauding EOPYY through fake prescriptions, costing the organisation over €3 million.
Of the 16 individuals implicated, hearings for the first seven are currently underway. Three suspects have been released, with two placed under restrictive measures, including €10,000 bail and regular police reporting. A doctor involved faces no restrictions after successfully proving the legitimacy of their prescriptions.
Michel, now jailed, played a key role in acquiring social security numbers (AMKA) for fraudulent prescriptions and distributing drugs illegally. His responsibilities included handing over the medications to a 51-year-old doctor or distributing them to others involved.
The next round of hearings is scheduled for Thursday.
