Urgent Travel Warning Update: Australians Urged to Leave Lebanon Immediately Following Deadly Pager Explosions

Following a series of deadly pager explosions in Lebanon, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has issued an urgent update to its travel advice, urging all Australians to leave the country immediately.

On September 17th, thousands of pagers, reportedly tampered with and distributed to Hezbollah militants, exploded across Lebanon, killing at least nine people and injuring thousands more. Hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties.

While initial reports suggested the explosions were accidental, The New York Times, citing American officials, now attributes the attack to Israel, claiming it was the culmination of a months-long operation. Israel has yet to claim responsibility.

"Do Not Travel" Warning Remains in Effect

DFAT's "Do Not Travel" advisory for Lebanon, in place since October 2023, remains in effect. Smartraveller, DFAT's travel advice platform, warns that the security situation in Lebanon is volatile and could deteriorate rapidly with little to no warning.

Australians Urged to Leave Immediately

With the potential for retaliation and further unrest, DFAT is urging the estimated 15,000 Australians still in Lebanon to leave immediately while commercial flights are still available.

Flight Disruptions Expected

While flight operations remain relatively stable for now, Smartraveller warns that this could change quickly. The Beirut airport could close, airlines may cancel flights, and ticket prices could skyrocket.

Register with DFAT

Australians in Lebanon are strongly advised to register their details with DFAT's crisis registration portal to receive updates and assistance.

Stay Informed

The situation in Lebanon remains fluid and unpredictable. Australians are urged to stay informed by regularly checking Smartraveller for the latest travel advice and updates.
