Greece is set to begin negotiations for the procurement of a fourth Belharra-type frigate, alongside the three already being built by France's Naval Group, as announced by National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias during the launch of the second frigate, 'Nearchos', in France on Thursday.

Dendias also revealed plans to upgrade several Hellenic Navy ships at the ceremony. The 'Nearchos' is the second of three Belharra-class frigates, following 'Kimon', with 'Formion' to be constructed next.

Dendias emphasized that the four Belharra frigates and upgrade programs for MEKO frigates, Roussen missile boats, and submarines will establish a formidable missile defence network in the Aegean Sea. This effort will be complemented by the acquisition of four Island-class patrol boats, Greece's future involvement in the design of the new Constellation-class frigate, and participation in the European corvette program. He also mentioned plans to increase the Greek companies' share in frigate construction from 12% to 15%.

Strengthening National Defense

The launch of 'Nearchos' represents a pivotal advancement for the Hellenic Navy and aligns with the government's 'Agenda 2030'. Dendias reaffirmed the Mitsotakis government's dedication to enhancing national defence and ensuring the security and prosperity of the Greek people.

"We are bolstering our presence in the Eastern Mediterranean, safeguarding the borders and interests of the European Union, while respecting the legal rights of neighbouring countries and adhering to international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea," he stated.

Discussing Greek-French relations, Dendias highlighted their historical closeness and shared values, particularly in defense and security, reinforced by the defense pact signed on September 28, 2021, which ensures mutual support in the event of external threats. He also intended to deepen long-term collaborations with French companies, particularly Naval Group, and open the Greek defence industry to global initiatives. One such initiative is the upcoming Greece-France Innovation Symposium, supported by the newly established Hellenic Innovation Center.
