Souvlaki Prices Skyrocket in Greece: Reaching €4.50 in Some Areas

The beloved souvlaki, a staple street food in Greece, is facing a price hike, with some areas expected to see prices reach €4.50 in the coming months.

In an interview with MEGA, the president of the Attica Steak Vendors Association warned consumers of impending price increases, particularly in popular neighborhoods across Athens and Piraeus. The cost of a wrapped souvlaki is poised to reach a record high of €4.50.

Attica Braces for Price Surge

Residents of Attica can expect to pay an additional €0.30 for a wrapped souvlaki in the coming months, with prices expected to peak before the Christmas holidays. This means consumers in Piraeus could be paying €4, while those in Kallithea may see prices around €3.90. Aigaleo residents might find souvlaki for €3.80, while those in the Northern and Southern Suburbs could be paying a hefty €4.50.

Thessaloniki: Already Feeling the Pinch

The northern capital of Thessaloniki is already experiencing higher souvlaki prices compared to Athens, with some establishments charging up to €6 for a sandwich.

Locals have expressed their concerns, with some noting that prices at souvlaki shops have doubled in recent years. This has forced many to reduce both the frequency and quantity of their souvlaki orders in an attempt to manage their expenses.

A Year of Significant Increases

The price surge becomes even more apparent when comparing current prices to those of a year ago. In Attica, a wrapped souvlaki cost between €3 and €3.70 in 2023. Today, even before the anticipated increases take effect, prices range from €3.40 to €4.20.

Steakhouse owners express their inability to absorb the rising costs, citing escalating ingredient prices. Consumers are left struggling to cope with the rising cost of living, as wages for the majority remain stagnant.
