Maria Angelikousi currently boasts a powerful fleet of 145 vessels of various types while also constructing more than 20 ships for her companies, Maran Tanker, Maran Gas, and Maran Dry. She is recognized as the leading shipowner in the Greek shipping sector. The Group’s commitment to the Greek flag is evident, as they own 119 of the 806 ships registered under it, accounting for 14.7% of the total.
As Maria Angelikousi stated when she received the Ship of the Year award for her dual-fuel VLCC “Antonis I. Angelicoussis” at the Lloyd’s Awards in December 2023, “The Angelikousi Group has always been and will remain a Greek family business. It is a core element of our DNA. We believe in Greece.” Notably, this ship sails under the Greek flag.
How the Empire Was Built
Born in 1918 in Kardamyla, Chios, Antonis Angelikousis took to the sea at an early age. After his heroic actions during World War II, he ventured into shipping in 1949-50, risking his savings, and within 20 years became one of the top shipowners on Miaouli Street. Notably, during the shipping crisis of the 1980s, he was one of the few shipowners who did not lower the Greek flag on his vessels.
Antonis was a visionary. He collaborated with American Express to establish a ship ownership and management company and raised funds from the international market for ship acquisitions. He passed away in 1989 at 71, leaving the helm to his son, Antonis, who skillfully expanded the business without seeking stock market investments.
The family’s fleet grew continuously, leading to a prominent position in Greek shipping. The Angelikousi Group employs over 300 young Greek cadets annually, currently totalling more than 1,200 across sea and land, making it a leader in hiring Greek cadets.
Following Giannis Angelikousis's death, the group is now led by his daughter Maria. While learning from her father, Maria manages the company in her own style, selecting her team of collaborators.
Remarkable Wealth
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Maria Angelikousi is now the second richest Greek woman in the world, with a net worth of $5.7 billion, trailing only Vicky Safra. She prefers hard work and letting her achievements speak for themselves rather than flaunting wealth. She is married to a Serbian prince, a descendant of the former King Karađorđević of Serbia, and they have one child together.
Kardashian's Wealth
According to Forbes, Kardashian's net worth is now estimated at $1.7 billion, up from $1.2 billion prior to the arrival of new investors like Wellington Management and Greenoaks Capital, who boosted her brand Skims’ valuation to new heights.
