Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will meet on Tuesday in New York on the sidelines of the UN Summit.
According to the information, the meeting is set for 11:40 AM local time (6:40 PM Greece time).
Government officials indicate the agenda will be “tight,” covering issues like migration, regional developments, and bilateral relations.
A senior government source stated bilateral relations with Turkey are not contingent upon the US elections. The Greek side will assess the situation post-meeting and consider “the depth of the issues we can engage in,” particularly regarding discussions on maritime zones.
The source further noted that during this turbulent period, with the Middle East producing more crises, the ability to communicate, advance a positive agenda, and avoid escalation is a significant achievement. The Cyprus issue will also be discussed from Athens’ perspective.
Government officials express cautious optimism about the resumption of talks.
Migration and Turkey
Regarding migration, the same sources emphasize that as smugglers adapt their methods, Greece must remain vigilant and enhance cooperation with Turkey, noting satisfaction with the current level of collaboration with the neighbouring country.
Greece-Cyprus Cable
Government sources report significant progress on the Greece-Cyprus cable project, highlighting its immense geopolitical importance, especially for Cyprus. They express confidence that there will be no significant geopolitical risks.
Disciplinary Action Against Salmas
Party officials assert that Marios Salmas’s expulsion from the New Democracy Parliamentary Group was inevitable.
Mitsotakis’ Engagements in New York
Prime Minister Mitsotakis is expected to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several high-ranking officials during his time in New York.
It is also anticipated that Erdoğan will address the Middle East in his speech at the UN.
The Greek Prime Minister is also expected to meet with other heads of state, expatriates, and investors.
