Greece Stands Firm with Cyprus Against Two-State Solution, Spokesperson Reiterates

In a Wednesday interview with ACTION 24, Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis firmly reiterated Greece's unwavering support for Cyprus, stating that their positions are one and the same. He categorically rejected any possibility of a two-state solution, emphasizing that Greece "will never even discuss" any proposal that recognizes the self-declared state in Cyprus.

Marinakis underscored the government's belief in the importance of UN-led discussions through the Secretary General. He highlighted Greece's commitment to engaging in substantive dialogue with Türkiye, based on arguments and without conceding on core principles. This approach, championed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, aims to strengthen Greece's position while pursuing dialogue.

Addressing calls to cancel the recent meeting between Mitsotakis and Turkish President Erdogan due to the latter's remarks on Cyprus, Marinakis argued that abstaining from dialogue wouldn't change Türkiye's stance. Instead, he emphasized the necessity of conveying Greece and Cyprus's unified position against a two-state solution directly, as occurred during the meeting.

Marinakis also highlighted the critical issue of migration, a top agenda item in the meeting. He portrayed the discussion on combating migrant trafficking rings as evidence supporting Greece's strategic approach of engaging in dialogue without compromising sovereignty. This approach, he argued, yielded a commitment from both leaders to intensify cooperation between Greece and Türkiye on this pressing matter.
