Olive oil is inextricably linked to the Mediterranean diet and is famous all over the world for its benefits. But is it as beneficial for dogs as it is for humans?
Yes, olive oil also proves to be highly beneficial for our four-legged friend.
Of course, apart from all the good things it can do, and we will analyse them right away, mixing a little olive oil with our dog's food can make it more tasty and tempting - something that helps more picky dogs.
But let's see now how olive oil can help our beloved dogs.
It keeps their skin and coat healthy
Some dogs have very sensitive skin and may develop dry skin at some point. Olive oil is the solution, as it helps all dogs keep their skin soft and healthy. Thanks to its polyphenols, vitamin E, and Omega-3 fatty acids, olive oil can be very beneficial for dogs' skin and coat.
Therefore, you can mix a little olive oil with our pet's food to release all its beneficial properties. You don't need to overdo it, though. One to two teaspoons is enough to see spectacular results in a few weeks.
Putting olive oil directly on a dog's coat is not recommended because it can encourage the growth of fungi and bacteria.
It strengthens their immune system
Olive oil contains carotenoids, which are known for their antioxidant effects and contribution to strengthening the immune system. Therefore, by including olive oil in your dog's diet, you help them fight various diseases and slow down premature aging.
In addition, olive oil, due to its antioxidant activity, reduces the risk of heart disease, dementia, and cancer—or so some scientists claim.
It helps their digestive system
Olive oil is a mild natural laxative, so if a dog has constipation problems, consuming it at regular intervals can help.
It improves their brain health
According to some research, the polyphenol oleocanthal contained in extra virgin olive oil can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, it helps with the brain health of dogs as they grow older, keeping their minds alert.
In addition, it helps improve older dogs' blood flow and movement.
Reduces irritations and allergies
Olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which help treat irritations or allergic reactions. So, if your dog is itchy because something stung them or they have an allergy to pollen, olive oil can soothe the symptoms and relieve the itching.
Summarising
Olive oil is also a superfood for dogs and has many benefits. Of course, you should not exaggerate. One to two spoons a day in your pet's food is enough. You should gradually introduce it into their diet, and it would be good to consult a vet first.
If you notice that your dog has an upset stomach or other symptoms after consuming olive oil, call the vet immediately.
