Greece’s coastguard reported a tragic incident on Friday as they recovered the body of a woman and rescued 15 migrants after their boat capsized off the eastern Aegean island of Kos.

In a separate rescue operation on the same day, the coastguard also saved 78 migrants from a wooden vessel approximately 23 nautical miles from the small island of Gavdos in southern Greece. The rescued migrants are currently being transported to the nearby island of Crete, as confirmed by a coastguard official who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the capsized boat remain unclear. Greece has historically served as a primary gateway to the European Union for migrants and refugees fleeing conflict and hardship in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. This influx peaked between 2015 and 2016, when nearly 1 million people arrived on Greek islands, primarily via inflatable dinghies. Although the flow of migrants diminished in subsequent years, it has seen a resurgence recently.
