The Police have made a new arrest in connection with a case involving the usurpation of properties belonging to Greek Cypriots in the territories of the Republic of Cyprus that are illegally occupied by Turkey.
The arrest pertains to a 61-year-old woman who arrived in Cyprus yesterday. The suspect was presented before the court today, which subsequently issued a detention order for a duration of seven days.
According to Police spokesman Christos Andreou, the new arrest concerns a conspiracy to commit a felony and other associated crimes concerning the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties within the occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus. The police are conducting an investigation into these offenses.
On October 18, proceedings will resume regarding the case of property usurpation affecting Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied areas of Famagusta and Trikomo, for which Turkish-Jewish businessman Simon Aykut is facing accusations.
Today, the Prosecuting Authority successfully obtained an adjournment. During the next trial session, it will address the pre-trial objections raised by Aykut’s defense team, which argues that the Criminal Court lacks jurisdiction over this matter based on international and customary law.
Simon Aykut was arrested in early June and has remained in custody since then. He is facing a total of 244 charges.
