Greek firefighters announced on Sunday that they had recovered the body of a German tourist who had been missing for two days on the southern island of Crete.

The man, in his 60s, had embarked on a hike with family members on Friday in the mountainous Chania region. When his family returned without him, they alerted authorities, according to the Ana news agency.

On Saturday, firefighters and the coastguard concentrated their search efforts along the western coastline.

“The hiker was found deceased in a challenging area near the Agios Antonios monastery in Chania,” the fire brigade stated.

This summer has been particularly harsh, with at least eight tourists, mostly over 60, having been found dead after attempting hikes on Greek islands.
