A devastating wildfire ripped through the Municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostini in Corinthia, Greece, leaving behind a trail of destruction, including the complete loss of the historic Church of Panagia Katafygia.

Located in the Zaholi region, the beloved church was no match for the rapidly spreading flames, as reported by KorinthosTV. The loss of this nearly 240-year-old structure represents a significant blow to the region’s cultural heritage.

A Symbol of Refuge and Resilience Reduced to Ash

The Church of Panagia Katafygia, nestled 10 km south of Derveni along the road to Sarantapicho, held deep religious and historical significance. Its very name, “Katafygia,” meaning “refuge,” speaks to its origins as a sanctuary for locals seeking safety from Turkish occupation in 1782.

Legend recounts how the first settlers sought refuge in the area’s caves and cliffs, eventually constructing the church as a symbol of their resilience. Maintained by a lone nun for nearly a century, the church was later cared for by the local community and nearby monasteries.

Over the years, access to the church was improved, solidifying its place as a cherished landmark. An annual fair held on August 23rd drew pilgrims to the site, celebrating the church’s enduring legacy.

A Community Mourns

The destruction of the Church of Panagia Katafygia marks a poignant end to a rich chapter in the region’s history. The community now mourns the loss of this treasured symbol of faith, heritage, and resilience.
