Dubai, UAE – October 2nd, 2024 – In a move that underscores the international reach of organized crime, Dubai authorities have apprehended two Greek nationals with alleged ties to the notorious Greek Mafia. The arrests, made possible through a collaborative effort with Greek law enforcement, signal a potential turning point in the fight against transnational criminal activity.

The suspects, wanted in Greece for a string of violent offenses, had seemingly sought refuge in the UAE. One, a convicted burglar, had audaciously escaped a Greek prison where he was serving a seven-year sentence. The other, a 41-year-old man, is believed to be a key orchestrator within the criminal organization, implicated in two murders and an attempted homicide in northern Greece. He is further suspected of leading attacks against rival gangs in a brutal power struggle to control lucrative illicit markets, including cigarette and fuel smuggling.

This investigation, launched in January 2024 by the Hellenic Police, exposed a fierce battle for dominance within Greece’s criminal underworld. The apprehended fugitives are linked to the assassinations of prominent underworld figures Yiannis Skaftouros (2022) and Vasilis Roumpetis (2023), killings that sent shockwaves through the criminal landscape.

As the investigation gained momentum, Greek authorities grew increasingly concerned about the potential for a resurgence of violence within their borders. This apprehension comes amidst reports of heightened activity within organized crime circles, including a recent attack on a former mafia associate while in police custody.

While Greek officials are engaged in dialogue with their UAE counterparts, the question of extradition remains uncertain. Navigating the intricacies of international law adds complexity to the process of returning the suspects to Greece to face justice.

Adding another layer to this intricate web of criminal activity, Dubai authorities also recently detained a Greek-Australian national wanted for drug trafficking. This arrest serves as a stark reminder of the interconnected nature of global crime and the need for robust international cooperation among law enforcement agencies.

The Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection remains vigilant, closely monitoring the situation in Dubai, acutely aware of the potential implications for public safety and the ongoing threat posed by organized crime both domestically and internationally.
