In a remarkable medical feat, a 55-year-old woman in Heraklion, Crete, recently gave birth to her granddaughter, conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using her daughter’s egg cells. This extraordinary case highlights the lengths families will go to support one another.

The mother, who lives in Crete, agreed to serve as a surrogate for her daughter, who resides in Athens and suffers from Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome. This condition affects the female reproductive system.

Dr Alexandros Zervakis, the obstetrician who shared the news, noted the mother’s unwavering determination to help her daughter, who was born with Type 1 MRKH syndrome, preventing her from carrying a pregnancy but not from producing eggs.

While rare, only two or three cases of MRKH syndrome are reported in Greece each year. This heartwarming story underscores the power of family bonds and the incredible advancements in reproductive medicine.
