Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to participate in the MED9 Summit on Friday, where leaders of Mediterranean EU member states will address pressing regional and international issues.
The summit, taking place under the cloud of escalating violence in the Middle East, comes at a critical time for the region.
Hosted in Paphos, Cyprus, the summit will focus on Middle Eastern developments, with Jordan’s King Abdullah joining to discuss the situation and EU-Jordan relations. The gathering will also serve as a precursor to the upcoming European Council Meeting, scheduled for October 16-18, setting the stage for high-level discussions on the European agenda.
Key issues on the table include the conflict in the Middle East, migration concerns—particularly the potential rise in refugee flows due to tensions in Lebanon—and Europe’s economic competitiveness. Leaders will also tackle the war in Ukraine and review the Draghi report on European economic stability, along with discussing priorities for the new European Commission cycle.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis is expected to highlight the need for a coordinated EU approach to the unfolding crisis in the Middle East. He will also reiterate Greece’s stance on migration, emphasizing the importance of securing the EU’s external borders and supporting frontline nations like Greece. Mitsotakis will advocate for stronger cooperation with third countries on migration management and call for the implementation of the EU’s Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The summit will conclude with a joint press conference by the attending heads of state and government.
