The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced a strong solar storm. On Tuesday night, scientists recorded a significant ejection of matter and magnetic field from the solar corona. Such a storm could temporarily disrupt power and radio signals.

Experts have issued a warning for a G4 geomagnetic storm (the second highest on a five-point scale) with a maximum speed of 1,300 kilometres per second.

NOAA had alerted operators of power plants and orbiting spacecraft to take precautions. It also notified the Federal Emergency Management Agency of possible power outages as the agency dealt with the devastating effects of Hurricanes Helene and Milton on Florida.

In October 2003, a severe solar storm plunged parts of Sweden into darkness and destroyed energy infrastructure in South Africa.
