Cards Reign Supreme in Greece

Mastercard announces Google Pay rollout across Europe including Greece

A recent survey by Payments Europe has revealed that cards are the most popular payment method in Greece, surpassing cash in the past year. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger generations, who are drawn to the convenience and variety of digital payment options.

The survey found that 68% of Greek consumers trust cards more than other payment methods, including cash, money transfers, and buy now, pay later (BNPL). Over 70% of Millennials and Gen Zers anticipate relying even more on new forms of digital payments in the coming year.

Merchant confidence in card payments is equally strong, with 77% agreeing that the benefits outweigh the costs and 62% preferring to accept online payments over cash. These findings underscore the increasing dominance of card-based transactions in the Greek market.
