In a bizarre case that has left a northern Greek town baffled, a 28-year-old man was found guilty of repeatedly breaking into his neighbours’ properties to sniff their shoes. The Thessaloniki court handed down a suspended one-month prison sentence on Thursday, following testimony that painted a peculiar yet non-threatening picture of the defendant’s nocturnal activities.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, told the court he could not explain his unusual behaviour, admitting it had caused him significant embarrassment. “I didn’t mean to break the law or harm anyone,” he said. “I just can’t explain it.”
Residents of the small town of Sindos, about 15 kilometres (9 miles) west of Thessaloniki, had grown accustomed to finding the man lurking in their yards, sniffing their footwear. His most recent arrest occurred just before dawn on October 8, when a neighbour caught him in the act, inhaling the scent of shoes that had been left outside to air after use.
Neighbours testified that while the shoe-sniffing incidents were frequent, the man had never shown any signs of aggression. One resident remarked, “He just seemed to have a thing for shoes. It was strange, but we didn’t feel threatened.” Despite repeated requests for the man’s family to intervene, the shoe-sniffing spree continued for at least six months before the arrest.
In sentencing, the judge imposed a suspended sentence on the grounds that the defendant had not intended to cause harm and had agreed to attend therapy sessions. Although the man’s antics have raised eyebrows, many in the community expressed relief that a resolution had been reached — and their shoes can now breathe easy.
