The Municipality of Athens is set to launch a free mammography programme for women residents and citizens, beginning Monday, October 21.
This initiative is part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to health prevention programmes and aims to facilitate early diagnosis of breast cancer, which can reduce mortality rates from the disease by up to 30%.
The mammography screenings will be organised by the Directorate of Municipal Clinics & Public Health in collaboration with the Association of Friends of the General Oncological Hospital “Agioi Anargyroi.” The programme is supported by the National Intermunicipal Network of Healthy Cities – Health Promotion (EDDYPY).
Screenings will take place at the Association’s facility located at Tiryns 2, Ano Patisia, from 09:00 to 14:00 on the following dates: Monday, October 21; Tuesday, October 22; Wednesday, October 23; and Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the 5th Municipal Clinic in Ano Patisia, located at 4 Sarandaporou Street, Athens. Interested participants can call 210 2015510-11 (extensions 119-120) to schedule their appointments.
Eligibility Requirements for Free Mammograms
To qualify for the free mammography screening, participants must meet the following criteria:
– Women aged 40 to 69 years old, who are residents or citizens of the Municipality of Athens.
– No mammography should have been conducted within the last 12 months.
– Participants must not have a history of breast cancer, biopsy, or cosmetic breast surgery.
– Women should not be menstruating, which is defined as from three days before to five days after their period.
– Participants must provide their social security number and any previous mammogram results, if available.
– A valid residence permit, identity card, or passport, along with proof of address, is required.
This initiative aims to promote awareness and encourage women to take proactive steps towards their health by utilising this free screening opportunity.
