The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, based in Crete, will play a key role as a co-organiser in a series of significant cultural events set to take place in New York between 21-25 October 2024, celebrating the life and work of the famed Greek writer.

These events, organised under the title "Crete and Nikos Kazantzakis Meet New York and the New World," aim to honour Kazantzakis and introduce his legacy to the broader American public.

The programme will feature a major event at the United Nations, an exhibition at the Consulate General of Greece, educational activities in Greek schools, and a literary evening at Queens College, where the museum’s short documentary will be screened. Professor Michael Taroudakis, President of the Museum's Board of Directors, will deliver a presentation on "Nikos Kazantzakis and Cultural Diplomacy" and speak at the UN event titled "Nikos Kazantzakis: A World Traveller."

One of the highlights will be the first introduction of the museum's new "Nikos Kazantzakis Educational Museum Package" to three Greek-American schools in New York. This educational kit, travelling to the U.S. for the first time, will remain available for use by Greek-speaking schools throughout the Americas.

The events will also include a mobile exhibition, "Nikos Kazantzakis: Life and Work," which has been adapted and translated into English. The exhibition, curated by Dimitris Kalokyris, will be showcased at the Consulate General of Greece in New York as part of a broader display of Kazantzakis' artifacts and life elements.

These events, organised by the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis in collaboration with several Greek and American institutions, aim to fulfil one of Kazantzakis’ own wishes to experience the "New World." Although he never established the Institute of Modern Greek Culture in America, his work was translated into English early on and became widely popular in the U.S.

The series of events is supported by the Region of Crete and other notable sponsors, and held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Co-organisers include the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis, the Permanent Greek Mission to the UN, Queens College, and several other cultural organisations.
