Cyprus announced on Sunday that it successfully prevented a digital attack aimed at disrupting access to its central online government portal. This incident is part of a series of similar attacks that occurred over three days, targeting state-run utilities and the Cypriot branch of a Greek energy company.
The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy reported that authorities' "quick and coordinated response" effectively thwarted the attack, designed solely to hinder access to specific government websites. The distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack temporarily impacted the main government portal, gov.cy, for just a few minutes, with no other government ministry or service websites affected.
While the deputy ministry did not disclose the attackers' identities or possible motives, officials confirmed that previous attacks on Cyprus’ electricity and telecommunications authorities, as well as the operators of the island’s two airports—Hermes—and fuel company EKO Cyprus Ltd., on Friday and Saturday, also failed. They assured that no client information was leaked or compromised during these incidents.
